The Team Proton Axle’s Faidzil Alang raced by Proton Satria Neo 1500 Max ATCS cars built by Proton’s Race Rally Research division in Shah Alam beat 25 other cars and took the chequered flag at the Bira International Circuit in Thailand, ensuring a driver’s crown win for the team in the inaugural Asian Touring Car 1500Max Series race.

Proton has successfully launched two new marques this year - the Persona and the Saga - but the company has much to do to restore an unsightly balance sheet.

Sales suffered a 55 per cent fall last year, which led to losses of US$169 million, as aggressive marketing from Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda and domestic marque Perodua caused Proton’s market share to plunge. Sales of the Persona are reasonably healthy, with more than 5,000 units sold last year. That has helped make up for the phasing out of Proton’s Satira, which sold 4,000 units in 2003. KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) Aug,2,2008 — Malaysia’s state-owned carmaker Proton is developing a new, fuel-efficient hybrid car to beat rising costs and address environmental concerns, reports said Sunday.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told the state Bernama news agency he had already test-driven the car and urged the company to continue researching energy-saving techonologies.
