MANUFACTURERS are racing to develop the first mass-produced and affordable petrol-free car for consumers, says Toyota Australia chief executive and president Max Yasuda.

Launching Toyota’s 2008 sustainability report yesterday, Mr Yasuda said without solving environmental problems created by cars, the industry had no future. The first manufacturer to produce an affordable petrol-free car could dominate the market.

Mr Yasuda envisaged a time when all new mass-produced cars would be petrol-free machines.

Volvo launched of its new entry into the diesel-electric hybrid bus market in last week. The hybrid Volvo 7700 is a 12-meter low-floor city bus that gets up to 30 percent better fuel economy and emits 40 to 50 percent less nitrous oxide and 30 percent less carbon, the company said. In addition, a smaller engine and nearly a third of the buses components are developed in-house by Volvo.

The hybrid Volvo 7700 uses “parallel hybrid” technology which allows the bus to be powered by either the electric motor or the diesel engine or both at the same time.

Chrysler LLC charged up the electric car race Tuesday, muscling in on General Motors Corp.’s Chevrolet Volt by unveiling three electric-powered models and promising to put one of them on sale in the U.S. sometime in 2010.

The three prototypes: a Dodge sports car, a four-door Jeep Wrangler and a Chrysler minivan. Chrysler’s product development chief, Frank Klegon, said the automaker hasn’t decided which one it will roll out first.

The Dodge sports car is completely electric and based on Lotus Europa underpinnings, but the Wrangler and the Town & Country minivan will be extended-range vehicles similar to the Volt, which GM has said will go on sale in November 2010.

Looking to challenge Jeep Wrangler head-on, Hummer has come up with an entry-level offering called the HX. Riding on a 103.0-in. wheelbase, the open-top HX measures 171.0 in. overall and is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 producing 304 bhp and 272 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The suspension features an independent front with coil-over shocks and a semi-trailing link rear. Brembo 6-piston caliper front and 4-piston rear disc brakes are found beneath 20-in. alloy wheels.

Toyota Motor Corp. has launched its 10th generation sedan - Corolla Altis in India hoping that the new car would help it to garner 10 percent market share of India’s growing automobile market. Toyota, which is lagging behind market leaders Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor and Tata Motors in sales, said it also plans to roll out its new small car by 2011. “Regarding the small car that everyone has been waiting for, we aim to start production and sales around the end of 2010 or early 2011,” said Vikram Kirloskar, vice chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd (TKM), a joint venture between Toyota Motor Corp and the Kirloskar Group in which Toyota holds 89 percent stake.

Chrysler LLC has announced plans to introduce new advanced electric-drive vehicles for its Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge nameplates, including a Town & Country minivan, by 2010.

Chrysler officials said Tuesday the company will have one electric-drive vehicle ready for North American consumers in 2010 and for European markets after 2010.
